An independent Bruges travel guide

Where to Stay in Bruges

The old town is small, so the right hotel depends on what you want to be close to. This guide compares four areas and explains the lodging tax and car access.

Where to stay in Bruges: four areas

Bruges has a compact old town, so most hotels are within a walk of the main sights. What changes from area to area is what is on your doorstep: the squares, the museums, the park and lake, or the train. This independent guide sorts the options by area. It does not name hotels or link to booking sites, and it does not compare room prices.

Treat the area notes as geography, not as a promise about price or noise. A hotel outside the old town is not automatically cheaper or quieter, so compare the final price and the way into the center for each place you consider.

Market and Burg

The Market is the central square, with the Belfry and the Provincial Court. The Burg is a separate square with the town hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood at Burg 13. A stay here puts the main sights within a short walk, which suits a first visit or a weekend.

If you travel in winter, remember that the Christmas markets run from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, Sunday to Thursday until 22:00 and Friday and Saturday until 23:30, and until 3:00 on New Year's Eve. Ask your hotel which side of the building the room faces. See our guides to the Belfry and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

Dijver and Mariastraat

This stretch along the canal is the museum neighborhood. The Gruuthusemuseum is at Dijver 17C, the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal at Mariastraat 38, and Our Lady's Church is close by. It suits visitors who plan a day or two of art and local history. Each museum has its own weekly closing day, so plan around them. Details are in our museums guide.

If you stay on Dijver in spring 2027, note that the Holy Blood Procession is planned for Thursday, 6 May, starting at 14:30 at Dijver.

Beguinage and Minnewater

The south of the old town has the Minnewater lake, the park next to it and the Beguinage. The Minnewater bridge is a free viewpoint, and the station is nearby. This corner is often described as quiet. That is an atmosphere, not a guarantee, so ask your hotel about the room if calm matters to you.

The Beguinage is a place where people live. Visit it quietly, and expect it to close at 18:30. Read more in our Beguinage and Minnewater guide.

Near the station

Practical for trains, with a walk or a short ride into town.

Distance to the center

It takes about 20 minutes on foot from the station car park to the Market. De Lijn lines 1 and 2 run from the station to stops such as 't Zand, the Sint-Salvator Cathedral and Dijver, at €3 for a 60-minute ticket.

Roadworks

Work on the station surroundings, phase 4, started on 27 March 2026 and is planned to end in December. It affects the north side of the R30 between the Unesco roundabout and Vaartdijkstraat. The end date depends on weather and technical work.

Arriving by train

For the old town, the station is called Brugge. Read the full journey from the capital in our Brussels to Bruges guide.

Lodging tax in Bruges

The city sets the rates. This is the rule in the 2026 and 2027 regulation.

Type of stay2026 and 2027From 2028
Room-based accommodation, per person from age 18, per night€3.75€5
Site-based accommodation, per person from age 18, per night€1.50€2

Approved holiday rentals are excluded from this tax and fall under a separate holiday rental tax regulation, so do not apply the €3.75 to every type of stay. The accommodation business is legally responsible for the tax. Ask whether the price you see already includes it.

Arriving by car or coach

Some streets in the center restrict cars. Steenstraat is car-free daily from 13:00 to 18:00, and other streets are low-traffic at set times. A hotel stay can allow you to register a license plate for the zone, but a booking does not open every street. On Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00, the 't Zand area can be reached through the tunnel under Koning Albert I-laan.

Tour coaches do not drive into the center. Exceptions include hotel guests with luggage and proof of their stay. Parking rates and park-and-ride options are in the Brussels to Bruges guide. Ask your hotel whether parking is included before you book.
