Taking the train: what to know

Four points that save trouble at the station.

Direct trains

The rail operator and the Bruges tourist information both describe direct trains from Brussels. No single journey time applies to every Brussels station, so look up the train you plan to take.

Buy your ticket before boarding

Since 1 July 2026, regular tickets are no longer sold on board. Use the website, the app, a ticket machine or a counter. Fares depend on age, travel day and time, so check the price for your own trip.

Get off at the right station

For the historic center, the station is called Brugge. Brugge-Sint-Pieters is a different station, so check the name before you leave the train.

Coming from the airport

Brussels Airport-Zaventem is not a city-center station. Trips from the airport carry a special airport supplement, so do not use a city-to-city fare as a guide for that journey.

Canal boats with passengers on the Dijver

From the station to the old town

The walk from the station car park to the Market takes about 20 minutes. If you prefer to ride, you have two options.

  • De Lijn city bus: lines 1 (toward Sint-Kruis) and 2 (toward the P+R Coiseau) run from the station and serve stops such as 't Zand, the Sint-Salvator Cathedral, Our Lady's Church and Dijver. A ticket costs €3 and is valid for 60 minutes, with transfers. Children under 6 ride free with a paying companion aged 12 or older. Activate a digital ticket before you board.
  • City center shuttle: runs daily 7:00 to 19:00, with a stop about every 25 minutes. A single fare is €3 since 1 July 2025. It is free for children under 6, for people aged 65 and over with ID, and for holders of the European Disability Card.

Ghent and Bruges together

The direct train from Bruges to Ghent-Sint-Pieters takes about 30 minutes. That time ends at the station, not in the historic center of Ghent, so allow extra time to get into town.

Many visitors treat the two cities as separate trips. If you want both, a day for each leaves more time than squeezing them into one. For a base that works for either, read where to stay in Bruges.

Some streets limit cars. Steenstraat is car-free daily from 13:00 to 18:00. Katelijnestraat is low-traffic daily from 13:00 to 18:00 from Ankerplein toward the center, and Geldmuntstraat and Zuidzandstraat are low-traffic on Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00. A hotel stay can allow you to register a license plate for the zone, but a booking does not open every street. Tour coaches do not drive into the center and use the Kanaaleiland and Bargeweg area, with drop-off at Bargeplein.

Roadworks near the station

Work on the station surroundings, phase 4, began on 27 March 2026 and is planned to end in December. It affects the north side of the R30 between the Unesco roundabout and Vaartdijkstraat. Work at Krakelebrug is planned until the Christmas holidays, and the N339 at Waggelwater has a building phase until mid-November 2026, with a local speed limit of 30 km/h. These are planned dates, so leave extra time if you drive.
